CRPD

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), is a groundbreaking treaty, which promotes and protects the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. It is the first human rights treaty of the 21st century.

South Africa signed and ratified the CRPD and its Optional Protocol (OP) in 2007, and is obligated under this convention to fullfil its commitments in terms of implementation and reporting. As one of the early ratifiers of the CRPD, South Africa’s  first country report is already due to be submitted to the CRPD Committee, which meets annually in Geneva to review country reports and which is mandated to oversee its full implementation by countries who have ratified it.

The World Network of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry (WNUSP) has a page dedicated to the CRPD on its website.

Please read and/download the WNUSP’s, CRPD Implementation Manual from this page.

It contains useful information and specific advise to user/ex-user/survivor groups on how the CRPD impacts on the lives of persons with psychosocial disabilities; and what needs to be done to ensure the full realisation of our rights.
